- Sign outside Driftwood in Silver Lake
- I had my first I-live-in-LA celebrity sighting. Hurley from Lost. I didn’t even watch Lost. I want a celebrity sighting refund.
- At some point, we had to stop listening to the Good Food podcast because it just depressed us. (You try listening to the bounty of available produce when your only option is a mango.) Now that we can actually go to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, and listen to Good Food on Saturday mornings, well, OK, I get it. California, your food doesn’t suck.
- Harry and I went hiking yesterday in Coldwater Canyon Park. I parked the car, looked at the map and started walking. We walk and walk, I see a path going uphill, decide “I should go up” and climb. Finally, I start heading downhill and see a parking lot. I am pleasantly tired, a little bit dusty, and ready to go home. Harry is pooped. I look around the parking lot and don’t see my car. I ask a woman where I am in relation to the parking lot I parked in. She tells me I have to go back up the hill. The one I just climbed. We walked together for a while and she talked non-stop about her hypnotherapy and hypnobirthing and how she photographs ghosts. All of this was presented in a fairly no-BS, earnest matter. I thank her for returning me to my car and pointing out how to get to George Clooney’s house.
- Then Ryan and I went to our first show at the Hollywood Bowl, Pavement and Sonic Youth. OK, LA, another thing you need to never complain about. This venue is gorgeous, you’re surrounded by beautiful scenery and you can bring your own food. As someone whose musical tastes solidified around 1995, this was my dream bill. (Add the Magnetic Fields if you want the trifecta, maybe.) My sister saw Pavement a few weeks ago in Kansas City and remarked to me later that everyone was so old—I’m pretty sure she means me too. I did a lot of show math while watching the set. I saw Pavement for the first time in 1994—16 years ago. Who was I then? Somehow I felt that same sense of wonder, of this is my favorite band and I don’t want them to ever stop playing but tempered with “It’s 10:30 and I’m tired.” They played a good set—including all-time faves “Frontwards,” “Grounded,” and “Summer Babe,” and ended with “Here.” The last line—“Last time, last time is the best time”—felt fitting yet melancholy.

Yeah, about the food in Tampa (which I know is not where you were)…what *is* that? I moved here and was all “Yea! Fresh fish!” and then I go to the market and they were all “boo, this is like 45 minutes inland, we definitely have to freeze stuff.” So then I asked some parents at my kid’s school where to get fresh produce and locally grown food and they sort of exchanged looks and won’t look me in the eye anymore. Did I miss a memo of some sort?
P.S. I replied to one of your comments over on my slice of internet, but I had to add a widget and I’m not tech savvy so, did you even get it?
“I want a celebrity sighting refund.”
You’re hilarious!
Janice—part of the issue (in SoFla at least—I’m not sure about Tampa) is that the growing seasons are reversed. Our CSA didn’t start deliveries until mid-October, iirc. If you haven’t already, check here. There’s gotta be something…
Raina—Ryan saw Jeffrey Tambor this morning in his office building! (His office building is not HBO HQ or anything.)
Thanks Rebbecca! We are actually fairly novice in our attempts to buy local. This is fantastic!
Oooh, you saw Pavement? I was a lame ass old person and missed them when they came to Stockton a few months ago, and I totally agree about your trifecta. Also, E of the Eels lives in Silver Lake, so maybe you’ll have an indie musician siting soon? Look for him walking his little basset hound with the crooked leg.
p.s. I can’t believe I just misspelled sighting. –sigh–
Harry is such a good sport! Link would’ve made me pick him up midway into the hike.
HURLEY is awesome!!! Take it back! :o)
hahahha. hurley. mine was eric estrada. I win.
I do have a certain fondness for CHiPs but maybe that is because I am old and nostalgic. 😛
Mellisa: You could have seen them in their hometown? That is huge. You missed out! We are big Eels fans around here, I hope we get to see them soon. (I think there is a new album soon? If you’re a fan, I think they’re doing Morning Becomes Eclectic on Wednesday.)
Sharon: Harry may tolerate a hike, but he is naughty in plenty of other ways. I forgot to mention that Hurley’s gf was wearing a Hurley (brand) shirt, so at first I didn’t think it was him because I was like, “Why would you wear a shirt with the name of the character your boyfriend is famous for playing?”
I must have had an extra helping of lame sauce that morning. My college self, with her two hour indie radio show, “Music For Serial Singles” would be totally ashamed of the fact that I missed Pavement in their hometown. The worst part is that the venue for that show was only half full.
The Eels just came out with a new album. It’s been in heavy rotation on my car stereo. I’ve seen them twice, once in Portland and once in Sacramento — both awesome shows. They’re playing in SF tomorrow, and I won’t be seeing them because of family obligations, BUT they’re playing down in your part of the world on Tuesday: p://www.ticketmaster.com/event/090044B6992B3C85?artistid=779733&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=60
Oooh Eels! Live! Gotta see if we can work that out…
Damn! I missed Pavement — no babysitter but the Mr went and gave it a meh… hope you are settling in in LA — my favorite celeb spotting place is the lobby of the Château Marmont and Barneys (of course 😉 )
Michelle, they killed it at the Hollywood Bowl, but friends who saw them in Vegas the next night (part of the Matador anniversary festivities) said they were not so hot. Such is life as a Pavement fan. I have to go to the Château ASAP—cross your fingers I see Sofia!
I love that you want a celebrity sighting refund! That is too funny. I’m sure you will have a good one soon.
P.S. Thanks for visiting and saying hi.
