If you see something three times, it’s a trend, right? (Did I make that up?)
One—Monday’s Sneak Peek on Design Sponge was a home in Shawnee, Kansas. They didn’t mention this in the accompanying text, but that’s where Ryan and I used to live. Our house did not look like this, though.
Somebody left a pissy comment about all the Eames chairs that appear in Sneak Peeks. Hater.
Two—The photographer of the house has a set of Kansas City images from her trip up on her site. I’m particularly fond of this one.
It should be noted that our wedding reception was in this very building, where Ryan’s beloved Boulevard Beer is brewed.
Three—While admiring Jennifer Hill’s prints, I found that there’s a new addition to her Places I Have Never Been series: Flint Hills, Kansas.
Have I mentioned that all our art is sitting in boxes under our bed? Yeah. But I still want the print. In its honor, Hill’s posting Kansas-related goodness all month. About halfway through this post, I realized I’m wearing a Kansas pride necklace, a wooden disk engraved with the shape of the state. I don’t think she has any in stock, but Early Jewelry is the place to find such things. And a lot of other awesome, affordable jewelry that your friends will covet (seriously—I always get compliments when I wear pieces from Early).
I guess that makes four. Take note: all the cool kids want Kansas for the holidays.
Even Kansans who’ve relocated to California. Speaking of my new state, Design Crisis let me crash their party and blab about my love of surfing. Not that I actually surf, but you can read more about that here.
Well, I guess I’m cool, since we’ll be hitting the sunflower state (did *I* just make that up?) for the holidays. I am hoping to do some antiquing/thrifting there. Any suggestions?
Erin,
You are cool. It’s totally the Sunflower State. I’m a little rusty on Kansas thrifting. As for old shit you can buy in slightly nicer locations, my picks are as follows:
1. River Market Antique Mall—if you only go to one, this would be my pick.
2. On your way to/from the River Market, hit Retro Inferno. A lot of what he sells is $$$, but there is other, no-name stuff that’s more affordable. (While you’re in the area, it’s a short drive to Hammerpress, home of awesome letterpress posters/stationery, and Christopher Elbow Chocolates, where nothing is bad.)
3. Wild card, dependent on weather and your tolerance for wandering: there’s a cluster of antique shops/mini-malls at 45th and State Line. The stuff is all over the place—old, fancy furniture with pedigrees, architectural salvage, imported stuff, but I’ve seen some great stuff in the antique mall there (I think it’s just called State Line Antiques). I haven’t browsed around there in a while, though, so dealers/shops may have changed since.
If you don’t eat at least one meal at Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ, our internet friendship is over. Sorry.
Retro Inferno looks AMAZING but, alas, I am not a wealthy woman. Antique Mall it is, and I promise to try to drag the inlaws to Oklahoma Joe’s, which should be a lot like twisting a rubber arm.
I usually dread this trip… feeling better about it already. Thanks for all the sweet info!
Since Rebecca would drag me on her hunt for “cool things” during college vacations to garage sales, going to the River Market Antique Mall is great since there’s plenty to look at in one location. I also recommend that you buy the Herman Miller chair that’s langishing at one of the booths. There is also lots of great vintage jewelry if you’re into that sort of thing.
Thank you for alerting me to this new trend, because I am so-not cool when it comes to trends. (seriously) 🙂
…someday.
Torrie, please feel free to say “Oh, that’s so 2010″ when the next Real Housewives is located in the KC ‘burbs. (Kidding, kidding, kidding.)
